Collectible of the Week - 2006 Phillies Wall of Fame Card Set

Phillies Wall of Fame Card Set (via eBay)

A tradition that began in 1978, the Phillies honor one (or, more) of their own every Summer when they induct a former member of their organization into the “Wall of Fame”.  Past inductees have included players, managers, coaches and members of the executive management team who have made significant contributions to the Phillies - a “Who’s Who” of Phillies history.

Though it has gone through many changes over the years, the current process used to select new Wall members is a secret, organizational ballot, with no input from the fans. For most of its history, a service time of at least five (5) seasons were eligible for Wall of Fame consideration - but, since Jim Thome was added in August 2016 (4 partial seasons), that appears to no longer be required. No word has leaked out as to who will be added for the 2024 season.

For many seasons the team has given out an oversized photo collage of the selected honoree as part of Induction Night - these are well done and are prefect for getting signed.  However, in 2006 Toyota stepped up with an additional SGA for Alumni Weekend: A Wall of Fame Card set.

The 4"x6" cards mimic the design used by the National Baseball Hall of Fame for their yellow "plaque" cards - with a photo of the player's Wall of Fame plaque, framed by a tan background.  A Toyota logo is centered under the plaque photo.  The 29-card set represents every elected Wall of Fame inductee from Robin Roberts (1978) to Dallas Green (2006), and the Centennial Team plaque.

It is unfortunate that the set only includes inductees up to 2006, though.  I would love to see them either partner with Toyota to produce an update set - or, create their own cards that, like the Hall of Fame, are sold individually in the Majestic Store.  The current set of cards is not necessarily rare, but does not come up that often on eBay auctions.  A good general price range for the cards is $10-15 for the complete set.
