Autograph Anatomy: Chase Utley
Introduction:
No one may be more synonymous with the Phillies late-2000s success than Chase Utley. The second-baseman was one of several homegrown position players that led the team to back-to-back World Series appearances - winning the prize in 2008. Because of his long tenure and significant accomplishments during his decade-plus career, Utley is a popular target for collectors. He should also be considered a "key signature" on any team project.

Pre-Rookie Signature (2000-2002)
While you can see the early characteristics of the more recognizable signature. In college and early during his professional career, Utley signed with a clear separation between first and last name - primarily forming the first initials of both.
"Stacked" Version
An interesting variation on Utley's signing habits is what I've called his "stacked" autograph. In this version he signs his first name, then signs the last directly underneath. I have received this style autograph in-person at games and previous Phestivals. It seems like he uses it when signing cards and hats - though I have also seen it on 8x10s.
