Auction Watch: SCP, Newport Sports Museum

When the SCP Auctions catalogue arrived a few weeks ago, one thing I noticed was the theme of Philly sports headwear.  Lots included multiple Eagles helmets, Flyers goalie masks and Phillies game-used hats - all originating from the Newport Sports Museum.  From this extraordinary collection come some unbelievable pieces of sports history - with these Philly sports pieces just being the tip of the iceberg.

Check out a few of the "headwear" lots from the auction:

Lot #284 - 1950s-60s Eagles Helmet

Talk about stepping back in time... The Birds wore these Kelly Green helmets with the silver wing emblem from 1954 through 1968.  Though missing the protective face mask, this headgear is in great shape, retaining original paint, chinstrap and interior safety padding.

Lot #360 - 1986-87 Ron Hextall Goalie Mask

If you're in your mid-thirties, chances are the the Flyers Stanley Cup Finals run during the 1986-87 season introduced you to ice hockey.  And, while there were no shortage of "names" on that team, rookie goalie Ron Hextall was someone everyone knew.  This white cage-mask originates from that, his award-winning, rookie season - and would instantly be the centerpiece of most Flyer memorabilia collections!

Lot #585 - 1960s Clay Dalrymple Hat

This lot features a hat worn by longtime Phillies catcher, Clay Dalrymple.  Back in the 1960s, catchers wore the soft hats instead of helmets - and based on the description, this one shows "excellent game use" (though, it looks surprisingly clean to me).  While not the biggest star of the era, Dalrymple was a steady contributor throughout the decade.
